In March NOLAA members worked on classic Uncial calligraphy and Celtic knotwork; for our May meeting we will explore contemporary Uncial variations.
Presenter Yvette Rutledge (Eve) of Mystic Blue Signs has been messing about with Uncial since the 1980s, using letters deviating from the traditional forms in projects for publishing and private clients.
She will show us some of her calligraphy from that period as well as some newer alphabets from social media posts by other calligraphers.
Some of these modern Uncial letters are made with unconventional tools like pointed pens or brush markers, some of the letters lean toward more cursive forms.
You will be given handouts with several styles and encouraged to choose a tool with which to try different versions of Uncial, perhaps to develop an uncial variation of your own.
You will need to bring:
Paper (like a Canson marker pad or drawing paper)
Ruler
Pencil and eraser
Ink (like Higgins Eternal)
Writing implements (any of the following) of your choice:
Chisel-edge metal nibs and penholder (like Speedball C, Brause or parallel pen)
Chisel-edge calligraphy markers
Pointed pen nibs (like Hunt 101, Nikko G, etc)
Brush markers
Monoline tool (like Sharpie, Posca or bold bullet point marker
